Dead Serious New Works By Luis Fitch

Luis Fitch

Luis Fitch is an international Mexican artist, designer, mentor, and creative entrepreneur specializing in fine art, working in urban and gallery art settings. Multiple mediums include oil, acrylics, industrial paint, natural pigments, and sand.

Raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Luis moved to the U.S.A. in 1985. He attended the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He considered himself an interdisciplinary artist and started drawing on flour sacks at five.

Crayons, as in the case of most kids, were his first encounter with color. As the year passed, his curiosity, identity, and survival instinct awoke. With the influence of the Mexican/U.S. border and the transitions occurring at the border, it wasn't easy to maintain a strong tie with the Mexican culture and roots. Thus, in the wake of this phenomenon, so many socio-cultural customs and individual identities are lost through the neighboring countries' influence (U.S.A.)

During these years, he was always conscious of these phenomena, and while observing the influence of his surroundings, he blossomed within these means.

He was surrounded in Tijuana by many people who migrated from South to North seeking better opportunities in life, thus forming important new subcultures. During this period of his life, he achieved to visualize and distinguish the discontinuity of culture between the South and North.

That is to say; the migratory step results from a society that is not more than the reflection of the needs of the human being in a given environment.

While he has enjoyed tremendous success with strategic branding and design through his cross-cultural branding agency UNO, his artwork has been presented nationally and internationally. It has more than 200 collections in the U.S.A., Mexico, and Latin America, including the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, the Minneapolis Institute of Art Minneapolis, the Minnesota History Museum in Saint Paul, and the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.

His prevalent work is profiled in international art and design publications worldwide. His design and artwork have won numerous awards, including The McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, Ohio Art Council Design Fellowship, The AIGA MN Fellowship, The Peter Glen Special Award for Public Services, and the 2018 City Pages Artist of the Year, among many others.

He has been named "Artist of the year" by City Pages, "People to Watch" by Graphic Design U.S.A. Magazine, and "Twin Cities #39 top advertising minds" by Metro magazine.

He lectures about cross-cultural design, art, and licensing at creative conferences and universities nationally and internationally.
